The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is extremely concerned about legislative activity on the Freedom of Choice Act which would have significant impact on abortion laws in our nation. The USCCB is requesting that people contact their elected officials to oppose this legislation. Cardinal Justin Rigali, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities stated the following in a September 19, 2008 letter to members of Congress;

" We can't reduce abortions by promoting abortion. We cannot reduce abortions by invalidating the very laws that have been shown to reduce abortions. We cannot reduce abortions by insisting that every program supporting women in childbirth and child care must also support abortion. No one who sponsors or supports legislation like FOCA can credibly claim to be part of a good-faith discussion on how to reduce abortions."
